CORNISH John II
1865 | 8 Apr. ‘John Cornish, a dirty looking fellow, was charged with assaulting his wife Eliza. Complainant stated that her husband worked at a pottery, and was in the habit of spending his time at a public house. She went out to work every day as a packer at a tobacco manufactory, in order to help to support herself and child, but on returning home at night she was often locked out by the prisoner, who also beat her and her child continually. The landlady of the house where the parties lived (Temple Street) confirmed complainant’s statement. The magistrates sentenced the prisoner to two months’ hard labour’ (Bristol Mercury). |

1864 | 14 May. Elizabeth Cornish was involved in a magistrate’s court hearing, allegedly having encouraged the prisoner, Susan Penny, in stealing and pawning goods. The husband of Elizabeth Cornish ‘said he had worked at the Bristol Pottery for 26 years, but he could not keep a thing in the house, as his wife got rid of it to obtain drink. He had three children, whom he could not leave, otherwise he would have gone from his wife years ago. There was not a single sheet on the bed. He was once a local preacher, but owing to his wife’s misconduct and drinking habits he was obliged to give it up, and he really didn’t know what to do. The magistrates said her conduct was most disgraceful’ (Bristol Mercury). |
