BROWN William

The son of John Brown of Abbots Leigh, Somerset, yeoman and the brother of John Brown (A).

1731 4 May. He was apprenticed to William and Ann Pottery, £8 paid with the apprentice.  Friends to find apparel (A, Ao, Ar).
1739 29 Mar. A potter of St Augustine’s parish, he was granted a licence to marry Rebecca Fudge of the same parish at St Augustine’s or the Cathedral (M).
1739 15 Oct. He became a free potmaker (F, G).

BROWNING Thomas

1751 25 Aug. A potter and widower of Temple parish, he was granted a licence to marry Grace Lander of St Mary Redcliffe parish at St Mary Redcliffe (M).
1751 31 Aug. Thomas Browning married Grace Lander (RPR).
1755 A Thomas Browning was landlord of the Goat alehouse in Temple Street (McGrath & Williams 1979, 22).
1760 & 61 Joseph Ward, potter, stood surety for Thomas Browning to keep an alehouse in Temple parish (AKL).
1763 28 Jan. Thomas Browning buried (TPR).
1763 Joseph Ward, potter, stood surety for Grace Browning to keep an alehouse in Temple parish (AKL).
1764 Grace Browning was keeper of the Goat alehouse in Temple Street (McGrath & Williams 1979, 22).

Born c1888 in Worcester, the son of Alfred Bryan and the brother of John Henry Bryan (11C).

BRYAN John Charles

Born 1822 in Bristol, the son of Uriah Bryan, the brother of Thomas Bryan and the father of George John Bryan (61C, TPR, A).

1821 11 Jun. He was born, the son of Uriah and Mary Bryan of Temple parish, bapt 19 Aug. 1821 (TPR).
1837 9 Jan. The son of Uriah Bryan, potter, deceased, he was apprenticed to J.D. Pountney (A, Ao).
1841 Potter’s apprentice, Pipe Lane, Temple parish (20), he was living with his brother Thomas, a potter, and his family (41C).
1841 22 Dec. Horsefair (21), the son of Uriah Bryan, grocer, he married Susan Vigors, daughter of Silvanus Vigors, clerk (JaPR). (Note: Uriah Bryan, potter, John’s father, had died by 1837 so this reference to Uriah Bryan, grocer is odd).
1842 30 Oct. Temple parish (TPR).
1848 24 Dec. Stapleton (TPR).
1853 31 Jul. St Philip’s parish (TPR).
1859 5 Sep. Noted as a potter when his son Uriah William was apprenticed to Thomas Barnes, timber merchant (Ao).
1859 23 Oct. A widower of Baptist Mills he married Mary Elizabeth Jenkins of Armory Square, the daughter of William Thomas Jenkins, excise officer (HTPR).
1860 21 Oct. Baptist Mills, St Philip’s parish (PPR).
1861 Foreman at pottery. Millpond Street, St Philip’s parish (39) he was living with his wife Mary Elizabeth (30) born in Manchester, and his children (61C).

BRYAN Thomas

Born c1814 in Bristol, the son of Uriah Bryan and the brother of John Charles Bryan (A, Ao).

1828 16 Jan. He was apprenticed to J.D. Pountney, aged 14 (A, Ao).
1834 29 Sep. Married Mary Ann …. (FM of his son Robert Lawrence Bryan on 30 Jul. 1868).

1841 Journeyman potter, Pipe Lane, Temple parish (25), living with his wife Mary Ann and family and his brother John Charles (41C).
1841 10 Jul. Thomas Bryan of Pipe Lane, Temple Back, alleged that he was dismissed from Pountney and Goldney, as in the election he had voted for a candidate named Berkeley, and not for one named Fripp as he had told Pountney he would.  Evidence was given by Samuel Marsh, foreman of the pottery, that Bryan had discharged himself (Bristol Times).

1828 16 Jan. Noted as a potter of Bristol when his son, Thomas, was apprenticed to J.D. Pountney (A, Ao).
1817 25 Dec. Temple parish (RPR).
1821 19 Aug. Temple parish (TPR).
1837 9 Jan. ‘Late Bristol potter deceased’, when his son John was apprenticed to J.D. Pountney (A).

BRYAN Wilfred

Born c1896 in Worcester, the son of Sampson Bryan and the brother of Gertrude Bryan (11C).

1917 18 Jan. He was a saggar maker when he enlisted in the army and served in India and South Africa, before being discharged in 1920 (PRO British Army World War 1 Service Records, 1914-1920).
