1800 18 Jun. He was haulier to Henry Carter at his pottery in Water Lane (Q).

GOODALL Jonas

Born c1814 in Broseley, Shropshire, the son-in-law of Samuel Marsh (41C, 51C).

1841 Journeyman potter, Pipe Lane, Temple parish (25) (41C).
1843 16 Jul. St Philip’s parish, widower, the son of Edward Goodall, a miner, he married Elizabeth Marsh of St Philip’s parish, the daughter of Samuel Marsh, a potter (PPR).
1845 & 46 Temple parish (TPR).

Born c1821 (Ao).

1836 29 Feb. He was apprenticed to J.D. Pountney, aged 15 years (Ao).

GOTHERIDGE George

1860 16 Jun. Mr Gotheridge of the Redcross Street Pottery was voted chairman of a campaign to lower the price of butchers meat after a public meeting on Brandon Hill (Bristol Mercury).
1865 Sep. Catalogue of the Bristol, West of England, Gloucestershire and South Wales Industrial Exhbition.

Born 1863 in Temple parish, the father of George John Gould and William Gould (81C, 91C).

1863 11 Dec. He was born (information from Mike Gould).

1885 24 May. 9 Old Market Street, St Philip’s parish (21) the son of John Gould, a labourer, he married Mary Ann Quail (20) the daughter of John Quail, labourer, deceased (PPR).

1891 Labourer pottery, 52 Oxford Road, St Philip’s parish (28), living with his wife Mary Ann (27), born in St Philip’s parish, and children (91C).

1950 29 Jul. He died at 135 Cotswold Road, Bristol, aged 86. His will was proved on 2 October 1950 (PRO National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966).

GOULD William

Born 1895 in St Philip’s parish, the son of George Benjamin Gould and the brother of George John Gould (01C).

1895 17 Feb. He was born (information from Mike Gloud).
1911 Porter tailor’s shop, 135 Cotswold Road, Bedminster (16), living with his parents and siblings (11C).
1918 1 Mar. When he was enlisted to the Royal Army Medical Corps at the age of 23, his occupation was given as ‘wedger’, so he was presumably working in a pottery (PRO British Army WW1 Service Records, 1914-20).

GOULDING Cornelius Andrew

Born c1870 in St Mary Redcliffe parish, possibly the brother of Henry Goulding (RPR, 01C).

1890 13 Oct. Merrida Cottage, Redcliff Hill, St Mary Redcliffe parish (21), the son of Charles Goulding, a labourer, he married Alice Brine (19), the daughter of William Brine, a collier (RPR).
1891 16 Jan. 19 Langton Park, Bedminster (JBPR).
1891 28 Phippen Street, St Mary Redcliffe parish (21), living with his wife Alice (20), and daughter Alice Elizabeth (3 mths), both born in Bristol (91C).
1892 15 Jan. 34 Oran(?) Lane, Bedminster (JBPR).
1901 Stone ware potter, 9 Doveton Street, Bedminster (31), living with his wife Alice (29), born in Bedminster, and children (01C).
1911 He is not mentioned in the census but his wife was described as ‘married’ and living at 77 Percy Street, Bedminster with heir children (11C).

GOULDING Henry

Born c1854 in Bristol, possibly the brother of Cornelius Andrew Goulding (81C).

1874 25 Dec. Redcross Street, St Philip’s parish (21), the son of Charles Goulding, a labourer, he married Elizabeth Taylor (19), the daughter of William Taylor, a smith (PPR).
1881 9 Melsom Buildings, Temple parish (27), living with his wife Elizabeth (24) a staymaker, born in Bristol, and son William (3), born in Bristol (81C).
1891 Widower, Merricks Cottage, St Mary Redcliffe parish (37), living with his children Elizabeth (7) and Charles (4), both born in Bristol (91C).
1901 He may have died as he is not recorded in the census and his children were living with their grandparents (01C).

 

GOULDING Richard

1757 12 May. The Rev. Joseph Stokes insured properties in Bristol including a ‘tenement behind the Old Crown Alehouse in the Tenure of Richard Goulding, Potter …’ (Adams 1973, 97).

GRACE Edward Henry

Born c1885 in Bristol (11C).

1911 General labourer, stoneware pottery, 140 Whitehouse Lane, Bedminster (26), living with his wife Rosina (22) and Alice (under 3 mths), both born in Bristol (11C).

GRACE John I

The father of John Grace III and the brother-in-law of John Weaver.

1709 15 Oct. A potter of Temple parish he was granted a licence to marry Mary Weaver of the same parish, at Temple.  Bondsman: Edward Ward II, potter (M).  Mary Weaver was the sister of the potter, John Weaver (PRO Prob RG11/667).
1733 18 Jun. Described as a potter when his son, John III, was apprenticed to John Weaver, potter (A, Ao, Ar).
1734 13 Sep. He was living in a house in St Augustine-the-Less parish owned by John Weaver, potter (PRO Prob RG11/667).
1739 8 May. Described as a potter when his son, Henry, was apprenticed to John Mason, turner (A, Ar).
1742 8 Jan. A potter of Temple parish he was bondsman to a licence granted to William Cory, glazier (M)
1742 16 Mar. Described as a potter when his son, John Weaver Grace, was apprenticed to William Cory, glazier (A).

 

GRACE John II

The son of Stephen Grace of Bristol, potter (A).

1731 11 Feb. He was apprenticed to John and Hester Weaver. Friends to find apparel (A, Ao, Ar).
1736 8 Jan. His apprenticeship was transferred to Charles and Mary Christopher (A).

GRACE John III

The son of John Grace I (A).

1733 18 Jun. He was apprenticed to John and Hester Weaver.  Friends to find apparel (A, Ao, Ar).
1740 10 Nov. A potter of Bristol he was bondsman to a licence granted to Isaac Littlewood, gentleman (M).
1750 1 Nov. Possibly the John Grace ‘Pot-Turner in the Glasgow Pot-House, aged 29 years or thereby’ who gave evidence in the Delftfield Pottery Case. It was stated in evidence that sometime before, he had been working at Joseph Fortee’s Pottery at Lambeth and had been working as a pot-turner for 17 years (Scottish Pottery Society 81/76).

 

GRACE Stephen

He was the father of John Grace II (A).

1731 11 Feb. Described as a potter of Bristol when his son, John II, was apprenticed to John and Hester Weaver (A, Ao, Ar).

 

GRACE Thomas

1713 13 Aug. He became a free potter because of his marriage to Susannah, the daughter of Samuel Stote, weaver (F).
1722 Potter, Temple parish (P).
