GEORGE Harriet

Born c1883 in Bedminster, the daughter of Jane George and the sister of Emily George (01C, 11C).

1901 Pottery transferer, 21 Hope Square, Bedminster (18), living with her parents (01C).

GEORGE James

Born c1855 in St Jude (01C).

1891 Pipemaker, 1 Penn Street, St Peter’s parish (35), living with his children Eliza (14) and Mary (12), both born in Bristol.  His wife Eliza (36) was a patient in the Bristol Royal Infirmary (91C).
1901 Traveller in pottery, 68 Cotswold Road, Bedminster (46), living with his wife Eliza (46), born in Bristol (01C).
1911 Traveller, smoking pipes, 180 Ashley Road, Ashley Down (53), living with his wife Emma (35) and son Albert (8), born in Bath, Somerset (11C).

GEORGE Jane

Born c1863 in Bedminster, the mother of Harriet and Emily George (91C, 01C, 11C).

1891 Labourer in pottery, 20 Stone’s Buildings, Bedminster (28) (91C).
1901 Pottery transferer, 21 Hope Square, Bedminster (39), the wife of Joseph, a mason, and the mother of Harriet (18), a pottery transferer (01C).
1911 Assisting her husband who was a general dealer, 16 Grove Park, Terrace, Fishponds (49), the mother of Emily (15), a printing transferer (11C).

GEORGE William

Born c1884 in Bedminster (11C).

1911 Mason’s labourer, Fishponds Pottery, 6 Grove Park Terrace, Fishponds (27), living with his wife Elizabeth (24), born in South Wales, and children Lillian (3) and Florence (8 mths), both born in Fishponds (11C).
1916 25 Jul. ‘Private William George of Grove Park Terrace was instantaneously killed, with four others, by the bursting of a shell in the war zone in France on the 8th inst.  Letters from Lieut. Symes and the Rev. R.E. Ramsey (army chaplain of the Gloucesters) to Mrs George speak well of the young soldier, who left his work at the Fishponds Pottery to join up early in the war’ (Western Daily Press).

GERRISH James

Born c1875 in Bedminster, the brother of Robert Gerrish (91C).

GIBBS James

See the Potteries section for the St Philip’s Pottery 3.

1875 8 Sep. A James Gibbs was noted as the tenant of ‘all that Pottery erected and built by the said Thomas Hooper Riddle … and formerly in the occupation of Messrs Yabbicom … and [in 1848] in the occupation of William Henry Pardoe’ (BRO 19835(9)s).

There are no references to James Gibbs as a potter and he may have been carrying on some other trade in the Pottery premises.

1820-22 Porter at the Pottery, aged 67 years (Methodist Class Book).

GIBBS Thomas II

Born c1823 in London (51C) or Bristol (41C).

1838 29 Jan. He was apprenticed to J.D. Pountney, aged 14 years (Ao).
1841 Apprentice potter, Vernon Court, St Thomas’s parish (11) (41C).
1845 1 Sep. Browns Row, the son of Thomas Gibbs, a cordwainer, he married Ann Mason, the daughter of Daniel Mason, a labourer (JBPR).
1846-51 Bread Street, St Philip’s parish (PPR).
1851 119 St Thomas Street, St Thomas’s parish (28), living with his wife Ann (28) born in Bristol, and children (51C).
1853 3 Oct. 119 St Thomas Street, St Thomas’s parish (ThPR).
1854 Possibly the Thomas Gibbs who died in Bristol (Ancestry website).
1861 His wife was a widow and warehousewoman living at 5 Plough Street, St Thomas’s parish, with her children Mary Ann (14), born in Temple Street, Harriet (10) and William (7), both born in Thomas Street.  Her eldest son Thomas (13), was living with his uncle William Mason, a labourer, and his wife Morgana at 122 Thomas Street (61C).
1874 12 Aug. He was noted as a potter when his daughter Harriet (24) of Clarence Place, married Joseph Daniel Price (JBPR).
1875 26 Jul. Noted as a potter when his son William (22) of St Philip’s parish, married Fanny Louisa Chester (PPR).

GIBNEY Florence

Born c1877 in Bristol (01C).

1901 Plate maker (potter), 13 Aberdeen Street, St Silas parish (24) (01C).

GIBSON Frank

1918 5 Sep. Frank Gibson, 29, was charged at the Bristol Police Court with being a deserter and with impersonating his brother.  Detective Wall, said that on the 27 August he went to the Bristol Pottery and saw the defendant, who gave the name of Charles Gibson and produced a discharge from the army in that name.  Accused told the Bench that he had reasons for so doing.  He had been out in France since the war began, and when he came home found his wife had been carrying on with another man.  The Bench said it was a serious offence, and they could not overlook it, despite the extenuating circumstances he had mentioned.  He would have to go to prison for a month (Western Daily Press).

GIFFORD Abraham

1728 8 Jan. Described as a potmaker he was one of the petitioners granted a freedom (CCP).
1731 27 Jul. A potter, he was to appear at the next Gaol Delivery (T).

GILBERT Bertha

Born c1894 in Stapleton, the sister of Ernest Gilbert (11C).

1911 Kiln room sorter in pottery, 21 Moorland Road, Fishponds (17) (11C).

Born c1896 in Stapleton, the brother of Bertha Gilbert (11C).

GILES Charles

Born c1858 in ‘Brockfield’ [possibly Brookfield], Wiltshire (71C).

1871 Potter’s boy, Church Road, St George (13) (71C).

GILL James

1851 6 Jul. Church Lane, St Philip’s parish, on the baptism of his daughter Elizabeth, aged 1 month.  Wife Elizabeth (PPR).
