BROOKS James

Born c1824 in Bedminster (61C).

1861 Porter at pottery, Windmill Hill, Bedminster (37), living with his wife Elizabeth (38), born Ilminster, Somerset, and children Sarah Ann (11), born in Temple parish, and Mary A. (4), born in Bedminster (61C).
1871 Labourer, 7 Albert Place, Victoria Road, Bedminster (52), living with his wife Elizabeth (48), and daughter Eliza (9), born in Bristol (71C).

BROOKS John

1915 25 Mar. Described as a middle-aged man, employed at the Albert Pottery Co., he was charged with four others of killing or taking two linnets, and also with cruelty to them. The bird catchers were found in a field adjoining Sparke-Evans Park, St Philip’s Marsh with a net, two linnets pegged to the ground, and a linnet in a cage.   Brooks said that he was in the field looking for a gate which had been taken from his master’s field and that he had nothing to do with bird catching. The case against him was dismissed (Western Daily Press).

1849 23 Dec. Broad Quay, widower, he married Sarah Legg (SPR).

1861 Fireman (pottery), 130 Temple Street, Temple parish (35), living with his wife Sarah (38), and children (61C).
1868 20 Jun. He was described as foreman of Price’s Pottery in Temple Street/Thomas Street (Bristol Mercury).
1871 Fireman stoneware pottery, 6 Church Lane, Temple parish (45), living with his wife Sarah (49) and children (71C).
1881 Pottery fireman, 45 Thomas Street, St Thomas parish (55), living with his wife Sarah (59), children and his mother-in-law, Ann Legg (83) (81C).

1909 24 Mar. ‘Died at Hanham, aged 83, Robert Brookes, for 67 years a valued and faithful employee at Price, Sons and Company’s Potteries, St Thomas Street’ (Western Daily Press).

1854 1 Aug. Noted as a potter when his son Henry Broughton (41) of Temple parish married Elizabeth Tanner (TPR).

Born c1813, the son of Alexander Broughton (TPR).

1854 1 Aug. Temple parish (41), the son of Alexander Broughton, potter, he married Elizabeth Tanner (48) of Temple parish (TPR).

Born c1894 in Fishponds, the brother of Alexander Brown (11C).

1915 31 Jan. Arthur Brown, 19, pottery apprentice (arrested at Fishponds Pottery), surrendered on a charge of assaulting Mrs Rose Pratley, at Henbury, on 4 January. Verdict of not guilty (Western Daily Press).

1902 6 Nov. ‘A man named Henry Brown, aged 50, who lives at 23 Atlas Terrace, St Philip’s Marsh, was working at the Victoria Potteries yesterday, when he fell into some hot water and was badly scalded.  He was taken to the Bristol General Hospital and was detained’ (Western Daily Press).

BROWN John

BROWN Lewis

1740 22 Dec. He was described as a potter of Bristol when he was bondsman to a licence for marriage, granted to John King of Bedminster (M).
1747 27 Jun. He became a free potter because of his marriage to Sarah, daughter of Lewis Watkins (F).
1754 Potter, St Mary Redcliffe parish (P).
1755 15 Feb. ‘One house and garden upon Redcliff Hill in the tenure of Mr Lewis Brown potter’ for sale by auction (FFJ).
1774 5 Oct. John Lewis, painter, obtained his freedom because of his marriage to ‘Elizabeth, daughter of Lewis Brown, potter, dec’d’. (G).
1784 8 Apr. Samuel Barnes, cabinetmaker, obtained his freedom because of his marriage to Ann. daughter of Lewis Brown (G).

BROWN William

BROWNING Thomas

1751 25 Aug. A potter and widower of Temple parish, he was granted a licence to marry Grace Lander of St Mary Redcliffe parish at St Mary Redcliffe (M).
1751 31 Aug. Thomas Browning married Grace Lander (RPR).
1755 A Thomas Browning was landlord of the Goat alehouse in Temple Street (McGrath & Williams 1979, 22).
1760 & 61 Joseph Ward, potter, stood surety for Thomas Browning to keep an alehouse in Temple parish (AKL).
1763 28 Jan. Thomas Browning buried (TPR).
1763 Joseph Ward, potter, stood surety for Grace Browning to keep an alehouse in Temple parish (AKL).
1764 Grace Browning was keeper of the Goat alehouse in Temple Street (McGrath & Williams 1979, 22).
