1861 Pipe Lane Court, Temple parish (30), living with his wife Alice (23), born in Bristol (61C).

 

PURNELL James

1780 23 Mar. A potter of Bristol, he was bondsman to a licence granted to John Hinton, carpenter (M).
1780 14 Apr. A potter of St James’s parish, he was bondsman to a licence granted to John Purnell, potter (M).
1780 16 Apr. He was witness at the marriage of John Purnell to Elizabeth Antrobus, at St James’s church (JaPR).

 

PURNELL John

1780 14 Apr. A potter of St James’s parish, he was granted a licence to marry Elizabeth Antrobus of the same parish, at St James’s.  Bondsman: James Purnell of St James’s, potter (M).
1780 16 Apr. John Purnell of St James’s parish, potter, married Elizabeth Antrobus (JaPR).  This marriage was recorded in the Bristol Gazette for 20 Apr 1780.

Born c1821 in Bristol (41C).

1841 Ash Lodge, Temple parish (20), living with his wife Blanch (20) born in Bristol, and children (41C).
1843 23 Aug. Temple parish (TPR).
1846 19 Jul. Dings, St Philip’s parish (PPR).
1851 He had probably died as his daughter Isabella was living with her uncle Charles Purnell (51C).

QUARMAN Benjamin

The son of Benjamin Quarman of Bedminster, Somerset, victualler, and the brother of John Quarman (A).

1745 16 Sep. He was apprenticed to Thomas I and Sarah Taylor, £10 paid with the apprentice. Friends to find apparel (A, Ao, Ar).
1747 5 May. His apprenticeship was transferred to Thomas II and Bathsheba Cantle (A).
1753 17 Jun. Presumably the potter of St Peter’s, Worcester, who was granted a licence to marry Ann Shore of St Philip and Jacob parish, at St Philip and Jacob.  Bondsman: Joseph Thrall of St Philip’s, potter (M).
1755 A date between 2 Dec 1755 and 6 Jan 1756. ‘Joseph Stokes of the City of Bristol brewer Late Mary Rowell, Water Lane near Temple St: A Tenemt in the possession of Benjamin Quarman potter City Land alias Sir Thomas White [lands]’ (PBk).
1756 21 Feb. He became a free potmaker (F, G).
1774 Potter, Isleworth, Middlesex (P).
1780 6 Aug. John, son of Benjamin and Ann Quarman, baptised (RPR).
1780 2 Sep. Noted as a potmaker, deceased, on the freedom of his son, Benjamin, a cordwainer (G).
1781 & 1784 Potter, Isleworth, Middlesex (P).

Benjamin Quarman was apparently the manager of the Isleworth Pottery (Ray 1968, 68).

QUARMAN George

1869 10 Aug. Noted as a potter when his daughter Mary (21) of Bishop Street married William May Walker (JBPR).

 

QUARMAN John

The son of Benjamin Quarman of Bedminster, Somerset, victualler, and the brother of Benjamin Quarman (A).

1748 25 May. He was apprenticed to Thomas II and Bathsheba Cantle. Friends to find apparel and washing (A, Ao, Ar).
1756 21 Feb. He became a free potmaker (F, G).
1757 He stood sureties of £5 for Thomas Patience, potter, and Edward Brent, potter, to keep alehouses in St Mary Redcliffe parish (AKL).
1771 25 Nov. He was described as a potter, late of Bristol, when his son, John, was apprenticed to Robert Vigor, glass maker (A).
1780 2 Sep. The freedom of ‘Benjamin Quarman, Cordwainer, son of John Quarman, Pottmaker, dec’d’ (F, G).

RABY Ann

Born c1842 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, the daughter of Edward Raby, sister of Sarah and Eliza Raby and sister-in-law of William Morgan (51C, 61C).

1851 Potter china, 12 Harris’s Yard, Temple parish (10), living with her parents Edward and …. Raby and her siblings (51C).
1861 Handle maker – cups, Melsom’s Building, Temple parish (19) (61C).
1861 23 Sep. Broad Plain, St Philip’s parish (20), the daughter of Edward Raby, a potter, she married George Coles (21) of Narrow Plain, St Philip’s parish, a freestone mason, the son of John Coles, a freestone mason (PPR).

RABY Edward

Born c1810 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, the father of Ann, Sarah and Eliza Raby and the father-in-law of William Morgan (51C, 61C).

1834 13 Jan. He married Maria Holiston at Nucknall Cum Bagnall, Staffordshire (Ancestry website).
1841 Pottery squeezer, Bethesda Street, Swynnerton, Staffordshire (30), living with his wife Maria (30) and children, including Samuel (15), a pottery glazer (41C).
1851 Potter china, 12 Harris Yard, Temple parish (41), living with his wife Maria (44), a potter china, born in Stoke-on-Trent, and his children (51C).
1856 11 Oct. Noted as a potter when his daughter Sarah, a varnisher of Park Street married John Shirley (HTPR).
1857 1 Jun. Noted as a potter when his daughter Eliza Raby (21) a painter of Park Street married William Morgan, a printer (HTPR).
1861 Flower maker, Joiners Square, Hanley, Staffordshire (48), living with his wife Maria (47) and son Edward (61C).
1861 23 Sep. Noted as a potter when his daughter Ann (20) of Broad Plain, St Philip’s parish married George Coles (PPR).
1864 Raby left the NBristol Pottery (Pountney 1920, 131).
1867 He died in Staffordshire (Pountney 1920, 131).

In 1846 the firm of Pountney and Goldney presented to the Bristol Museum a vase made by Edward Raby and coloured by William Fifield. Pountney (1920, 130) attributes another vase to Raby and states it was made in 1840, but it appears that Raby was still in Stoke at that time.

Pounteny (1920, 131) states his Edward Raby’s son Samuel worked at the Royal Porcelain Works, Worcester, in 1856.

RABY Eliza

Born c1835 in Stoke-on-Trent, the daughter of Edward Raby, sister of Ann and Sarah Raby and wife of William Morgan (51C, HTPR).

1851 Potter’s assistant, 12 Harris Yard, Temple parish (16), living with her parents and siblings (51C).
1857 1 Jun. Painter, Park Street (21) the daughter of Edward Raby, a potter, she married William Morgan (21), a printer, of Park Street, the son of John Morgan, a painter and glazer (HTPR).

 

RABY Sarah

Born c1834 in Stoke-on-Trent, the daughter of Edward Raby, sister of Ann and Eliza Raby (51C).

RADFORD William

The son of William Radford of St George, Gloucestershire, coppersmith (A).

1767 25 Mar. He was apprenticed to William and Susannah Taylor, with £10 premium (A, Ao).
1774 4 Oct. He became a free potter (F, G).
1774 Potter, Temple parish (P).
1780 20 Jan. A potter of St George, he was included in the list of persons benefiting from a subscription for relief, if they were chosen for the Militia (BG).
1781 & 1784 Potter, St George (P).
1785 29 Apr. A potter of St George, he was a bondsman to the administration of the estate of Hester Evans, wife of Evan Evans (Adm).
1786 18 Feb. Probably the William Radford of St George, Gloucestershire, victualler, who was bondsman to the administration of the estate of Ann Chick of St George (Adm).
