1728 11 Jul. A potter of Bristol, he stood surety of £10 for the appearance of Richard Owen at the next Sessions (T).
1729 3 Jun. ‘Joseph Thrall agt John Smith, potter of Redcliff Hill. Thursday June 3 1729 Pltf. proved Deft. indebted to him 2s.2½d for Geneva and Tobacco sold. Ordered it be pd. with costs in a month’ (C). See also Joseph Thrall.
1735 22 May. ‘Henry Hurd agst John Smith potter works at Mr Christophers Lime Kiln Lane. Thurs June 19th 1735 Debt proved 20s for signors ordered it be pay’d with costs …’ (C). See also Charles Christopher.

1751 11 Mar. He was apprenticed to Thomas II and Bathsheba Cantle. Friends to find apparel and washing; paid with the apprentice £10 the gift of Edward Colston, Esq., deceased (A, Ao, Ar).
1756 26 Jun. His apprenticeship was transferred to William Taylor (A).

1873 24 Jan. Possibly the John Smith who ‘was charged with stealing a quantity of oats, valued 6d, the property of Mr John Ellis, of the Crown Pottery, St George’s. The prisoner had been in a position of trust for some years, during which time a great many things had been lost, but the present charge was the first proved against him. He was sentenced to two months’ hard labour’ (Western Daily Press).
