1898 | 26 Jul. Inquest into the death of Mary Jane Davis Merchant, aged 47 years, held at the Bristol Workhouse, Stapleton. ‘Elizabeth Merchant, a widow, identified the decease as her daughter, who had been in the workhouse for just over a month, previous to which she had worked at the Victoria Pottery for a number of years. Robert Norgate, resident medical officer at the workhouse, said the deceased was admitted in a semi-alcoholic condition, as a case of kidney disease. She suffered from dropsy, and afterwards developed brain symptoms, death occurring on the 23 inst. Death was due to chronic alcoholism, assisted by traces of lead poisoning’ (Bristol Mercury). |
