MERCHANT Mary Jane Davis

Born c1851 in Bristol, the sister of John Merchant (71C).

1871 Transferer in pottery, 15 Rose Alley, Temple parish (20), living with her widowed mother Elizabeth, a laundress, and siblings (71C).
1881 Transferer in pottery, 5 Pump Court, Temple parish (30), living with her widowed mother (81C).
1891 Potter’s transferer, 11 Pump Court, Temple parish (40) (91C).
1898 26 Jul. Inquest into the death of Mary Jane Davis Merchant, aged 47 years, held at the Bristol Workhouse, Stapleton. ‘Elizabeth Merchant, a widow, identified the decease as her daughter, who had been in the workhouse for just over a month, previous to which she had worked at the Victoria Pottery for a number of years. Robert Norgate, resident medical officer at the workhouse, said the deceased was admitted in a semi-alcoholic condition, as a case of kidney disease. She suffered from dropsy, and afterwards developed brain symptoms, death occurring on the 23 inst. Death was due to chronic alcoholism, assisted by traces of lead poisoning’ (Bristol Mercury).

1812 1 Aug. Noted as an earthenwareman and brickmaker when, with his wife Emma, he took John Picet of Jersey, as an apprentice (A).
