JONES Solomon

Born c1828 in Bristol (41C).

1841 Potter’s apprentice, Temple Court, Temple parish (13) living with his father John Jones, a coppersmith (41C).

JONES Thomas I

1718 11 Nov. The inventory of the estate of Thomas Jones of Westbury-on-Trym, potter, deceased, included his wearing apparel valued at £4 and ‘wages for his service to Mr Richard Yeamans £2.9s.0d and from Mr Samuel Yeamans £1.3s.0d’.  (BRO Prob Inventory 170). See also the potters Richard and Samuel Yeamans.
1718 12 Nov. A potter of Redland in the parish of Westbury-on-Trym, deceased, the administration of his estate was granted to his widow, Elizabeth (Adm.).

 

JONES Thomas II

1744 11 Mar. He was described as a potter when his son, William, was apprenticed to William Tombs, shipwright (A, Ar).

 

JONES Thomas III

1805 Then in Bovey Tracey in Devon, he was born in ‘Land Garrick’, Monmouthshire.  When he was 14 he hired himself with Ring and Carter in the pottery manufactory at Temple Backs, Bristol, and stayed there for 10 years.  Then he came to Burslem, Staffordshire, and worked with Enoch Wood as a journeyman.  He then went to Swansea in Wales and rented a dwelling house for £17 a year, and lived there for 1½ years, before moving to Bovey Tracey where he hired himself to Messrs Honeychurch and company for a year, of which he had served 3 months (Settlement Examination, Overseers of the Poor, Bovey Tracey – Devon Heritage Centre 2160 A/PO 751).

JONES William

The son of Jacob Jones of Olveston, Gloucestershire, labourer (A).

1758 29 Nov. He was apprenticed to William Taylor with £10, the gift of the Gloucestershire Society (A, Ao).
1761 22 Jan. He stood surety of £20 ‘for Craddock’ to appear at the next Tolzey Court (BRO Wooden Box, 1761, Bundle 21 No.1a).
1765 23 Dec. ‘Wm Jones Potter £20, James Powell Accountant and John Saul Potter £10 each for the appearance of the said Wm Jones at the next sess. to Answer to all such matters and things as shall be alleged against him by one Samuel Holloway …’ (T).
1766 19 Mar. ‘William Jones Potter £40, James Powell accountant, John Saul Potter £20 each, for the appearance of the said William Jones at the next sessions to prosecute Traverse on a Bill of Indictment found agt him for a Misdemeanor …’ (T; BRO Wooden Box 1765, Bundle 10 No.1).

1848 17 Jan. Noted as a potter when his daughter Hannah of St Philip’s parish married Isaac Wood (PPR).
1848 25 Dec. Noted as a potter when his daughter Jane of St Philip’s parish married Henry Tovey (PPR).

1851 Potter earthenware, 11/12 Sargeant Street, Bedminster (31), living with his wife Sarah (24) and son George (1), both born in Bristol (51C).

JUSTICE Joseph I

Born c1813 in Temple parish, the father of William Justice and Joseph Justice II (51C, 61C)

1841 Water Lane, Temple parish (27) living with his wife Mary (31) born in Temple and children (41C).
1844 18 Feb. Temple parish (TPR).
1851 Potter’s labourer and greengrocer, 6 Tower Street, Temple parish (38) living with his wife Mary (44) and children (51C).
1859 11 May. Noted as a potter when his daughter Louisa (22) of Mill Lane, Bedminster married Joseph Millars (JBPR).
1861 Kiln burner, 1 Glasshouse Court, Temple parish (46), living with his wife Mary Ann (50) and children (61C).
1867 2 Mar. Noted as a potter when his son William (29) of Colston Street married Ellen Smith (28) a widow (JBPR).
1868 1 Sep. Noted as a potter when his son George Somerton Justice (22) of Russ Street married Caroline Jane Hodge (PPR).

Born c1841 in Temple parish, the son of Joseph Justice I (71C).

1861 Apprentice white ware potter, 1 Glasshouse Court, Temple parish (20), living with his parents and siblings (61C).
1871 Potter, Elm Cottage, Bedminster (30), living with his wife Jane (23), born in Longport, Staffordshire, and children William (2), born in Bristol (or Mexbro, Yorkshire in 1881 census) and Thomas (1), born in Bristol (71C).
1881 Potter, 40 Manchester Road, Poplar, London (46), living with his wife Jane (33) and children including Mary A. (8), born in Burslem, Jane (6), born in Burslem, Louisa (3), born in Burslem and Joseph (1), born in Poplar (81C).
1911 He was still working as a potter in Poplar, aged 70 (11C).

JUSTICE William

Born c1838 in Temple parish, the son of Joseph Justice I and the brother of Joseph Justice II (51C, 61C).
