HOWELL Henry Joseph

Born in 1850 in Bristol, the son of Joseph Howell I and brother of John Howell II and William Howell II and the son-in-law of Edward Appleford (71C, PPR).

1855 12 Aug. Born 8 Jan 1850 he was baptised, the son of Joseph and Mary Howell (PPR).
1871 Stoneware potter, 5 Lewis’s Buildings, Temple parish (21) (71C).
1872 7 Jul. Unity Street, St Philip’s parish, the son of Joseph Howell, potter, he married Mary Ann Appleford (21) of Unity Street, the daughter of Edward Appleford, potter (PPR).

HOWELL James

1883 9 Mar. An Inquest carried out at the Royal Infirmary ‘on the body of James Howell, aged 39 years, a fireman at Messrs Price’s pottery.  The deceased had attended the hospital, where he was treated for pleurisy, and on Wednesday morning a man named John Phippin found him lying dead in a field near the Railway Bridge, St Philip’s Marsh. There was no appearance of a struggle near the place where the deceased was found. The wife stated that shortly after Christmas the deceased fell down and sustained a severe wound in the head. He then lost a large quantity of blood, and since had never been in good health. [It was found] the deceased had suffered from inflammation of the lungs and pleurisy … and that death was due to syncope brought on by the before mentioned maladies’ (Bristol Mercury).

HOWELL John I

1787 17 Nov. ‘Whereas I John Howell, Pot-Maker, of the Parish of St Philip, did last night most grossly insult, abuse, and obstruct John Baxter, one of the Officers belonging to St Peter’s Hospital, who was doing his Duty in apprehending and bringing to Justice certain Vagrants and Ballard Singers … I have rendered myself liable to be severely punished … but in consideration of it’s being my first Offence, and on my begging  Pardon of the Officer … the Corporation of St Pater’s Hospital are pleased to stop all Proceedings against me’.  The apology was witnessed by Samuel Crinks, potmaker (BMBJ).
