GATES John

1771 John Gates was running the Lewins Mead Pottery which was offered for sale.

No further details are known about the occupants of the Pottery.

1771 15 Aug. ‘Now selling off, under Prime-cost (on the Premises) All the Stock in Trade, belonging to the Pot-House, opposite the White Friars in Lewins-Mead, Bristol, lately in the Possession of John Gates; consisting of Brown Stone Ware, viz., oil-jars, Pickling Pots, Pitchers, Quart, Pint, and Half Pint Mugs, etc.
Also the Pot-House compleat, To be Let, with a Kiln built on the Premises, four good wheels standing Plenty of Pot-Boards, and all sorts of Utensils necessary for a Pot-Manufactory, Likewise four Dwelling Rooms, belonging to the said Pot-House, with every other useful Conveniency for such a Work – The Premises may be viewed and further Particulars had by applying to John Gates, aforesaid’ (BG).

GAYNARD (GAYNER) James

The son of James Gaynard of Bristol, scissor, deceased (A).

1714 13 Nov, 8 or 13 Dec. He was apprenticed to Thomas I and Elizabeth Frank with a gift from the Quaker’s charity (A, Ao, Ar).
1722 14 Mar. He became a free gallypotmaker (F).
1734 Gallypotmaker, St Mary Redcliffe parish (P).
1739 Gallypotmaker, Castle Precincts (P).
1743 15 Jul. Potter, Castle Precincts (Ao)
1749 7 Nov. He was described as a potter, late of the city, when his son, Peter, was apprenticed to Elizabeth Prickett, widow of a barber surgeon (A, Ar).
1756 1 Jun. Noted as a potter when his son, George, was apprenticed to Luke Wilmott, hooper (A).
1762 15 Jan. Noted as a potter when his son, William, was apprenticed to James Gerrish, tailor (A).
1781 9 Feb. He was dead when his son, James, became a free yeoman (G).

GEALE William

1866 22 Aug. He was an engineer at Pountney’s Bristol Pottery when he was injured in an accident at the works (Western Daily Press).

GEORGE Cecilia

1841 25 Dec. Described as an employee of White’s Pottery, Rich’s Buildings, Redcross Street, when she assaulted another employee, Ann Long.  ‘Long took away George’s candle, on which the latter seized her by the throat, pulled her to the ground, twisted her neck, and violently beat her head against the floor’. George was ordered to be kept in custody until Long could leave the Royal Infirmary and  was able to appear in court (Bristol Times).

1911 Assisting her husband who was a general dealer, 16 Grove Park, Terrace, Fishponds (49), the mother of Emily (15), a printing transferer (11C).

GEORGE William

Born c1884 in Bedminster (11C).

1911 Mason’s labourer, Fishponds Pottery, 6 Grove Park Terrace, Fishponds (27), living with his wife Elizabeth (24), born in South Wales, and children Lillian (3) and Florence (8 mths), both born in Fishponds (11C).
1916 25 Jul. ‘Private William George of Grove Park Terrace was instantaneously killed, with four others, by the bursting of a shell in the war zone in France on the 8th inst.  Letters from Lieut. Symes and the Rev. R.E. Ramsey (army chaplain of the Gloucesters) to Mrs George speak well of the young soldier, who left his work at the Fishponds Pottery to join up early in the war’ (Western Daily Press).

GIBBS James

1875 8 Sep. A James Gibbs was noted as the tenant of ‘all that Pottery erected and built by the said Thomas Hooper Riddle … and formerly in the occupation of Messrs Yabbicom … and [in 1848] in the occupation of William Henry Pardoe’ (BRO 19835(9)s).

There are no references to James Gibbs as a potter and he may have been carrying on some other trade in the Pottery premises.
