CLARK Henry

1821 14 Aug. Aged 16 he was apprenticed to J.D. Pountney (Ao).
1830 St Michael’s Buildings, Kingsdown, St Michael’s parish (P).
1832 & 34 St Michael’s Buildings, Kingsdown, St James’s parish (List of Electors BRO 04736).
1847 24 Jan. Newfoundland Street, the son of Thomas Clark, labourer, he married Ann Willis the daughter of William Willis, pipe maker (PaPR).
1851 12 Oct. Great George Street, St Philip’s parish, when his son Thomas (aged 3 wks) was baptised.  Wife Ann (PPR).
1851 18 Oct. Described as a potter living at 7 Narrow Weir. He had been apprenticed to Mr Pountney and had worked at the Bristol Pottery for ‘upward of 23 years’. He had designed a stained glass window which had appeared in the Great Exhibition (Bristol Times).

1853 16 Oct. Noted as a potter when his son John Clark II of Stokes Croft, married Elizabeth Jones (JaPR).

CLEEVE Walter

1867 9 Nov. ‘Walter Cleeve was charged with stealing three baskets of ware, value £1.2s.6d, the property of Messrs Pountney and Co., of the Bristol Pottery, and he was also further charged with forging the name of William Richards to a receipt.  It appeared from the evidence that the prisoner had been in the employ of the complainants as a porter for about a month, and it was his duty to take out small quantities of goods to the customers of the firm.  On these occasions he was furnished with an invoice which was receipted by the cashier, William Richards.  On Tuesday, the 29 October, the prisoner went to the shop of Mrs Keen, in Bullpaunch Lane, and asked if she wanted any ware, and he was told that he might bring some seconds ware.  On the following day he brought to the shop a load of ware, and gave a bill of £1.2s.6d [which was paid by Mrs Keen] … He never accounted for the money … The prisoner was remanded for further examination’. He was later discharged as there were legal difficulties in obtaining a conviction (Bristol Mercury, Western Daily Press).

CLOUGH Aaron

1875 24 Jul. ‘Aaron Clough, a Staffordshire potter, was again charged, on remand, with committing a breach of contract with his master, Mr Cobden of the Bristol Victoria Potteries, by leaving his work without giving a week’s notice. [Magistrate said] it would be an injury to the man and no benefit to the master to send the prisoner to gaol, and he would suggest that some arrangement should be made between the employer and the prisoner that he should pay the expenses incurred by his leaving work … it was arranged that the case should be adjourned for two months, the defendant to pay the complainant 10s weekly through Sargeant Perrott’ (Western Daily Press).
He was probably the Aaron Clough, born in 1852 in Longton, Staffordshire, who was living at 1 Heathcote Road, Longton in 1881 (81C).

1867 25 May. He was described as the manager of the Bristol Pottery in Water Lane (Bristol Mercury).
1871 Manager of potteries, 1 Freemantle Villa, St James’s and St Paul’s parish (42), living with his wife Elizabeth (50), born in Cheadle, Staffordshire (71C).
1881 Retired chemist, Sandown Lane, Wavertree, Lancashire (52), living with his wife Elizabeth (62), born in Hanley, Staffordshire (81C).
1881 20 Aug. He died in Liverpool leaving an estate valued at £6,027.14s.4d (PRO Calendar of Wills and Administrations).
