Born c1814 in Burslem, Staffordshire, the husband of Mary Bath and the father of John Bath II (51C).

1851 Journeyman potter (37), 4 Gough’s Court, Temple parish, with wife Mary (37), a potter, and family (51C).

Born c1784 in Tamworth, Staffordshire, the father-in-law of William Grainger and the husband of Ann Bath (51C).

1846 18 Feb. A potter when his daughter Ann, of Gough’s Court, married William Grainger, potter (TPR).
1848 30 Jul. Temple parish (TPR).
1851 13 Rose Alley, Temple parish, with his wife Ann (64), born in Stafford, and family (51C).

1881 Transferer in pottery, 6 Church Street, Temple parish (19), living with her husband Henry, a mattress maker (81C).

BATTEN Frances

Born c1877 in Bristol (01C).

1901 Works in pottery, 4 Clarence Square, Bedminster (24), the wife of Robert, a mason’s labourer (01C).
1911 She had probably died, as her husband had remarried (11C).

BATTEN Ginnie

Born c1874 in Bristol (11C).

1911 Pottery, cup maker, boarding at 43 King Street, Bedminster (27) (11C).

BATTEN (BATTIN) Thomas

1741 20 Aug. ‘Edward Wilkins agst. Thomas Batten works at Mr Penningtons pothouse.  Thursday 3rd Sept. 1741 Debt proved to be 5s 9d order’d it be paid with costs at 1s a week’ (C).
1741 10 Sep. ‘Philip Stockman agt. Thomas Battin at the Pothouse in Limekiln Lane.  Thursday the 24th Sept. 1741 Debt proved to be 17s 2½d for victuals and drink order’d it be paid with costs at 1s a week’ (C).
1758 He stood surety of £5 for Boon Powell to keep an alehouse in Temple parish (AKL).

BAYLY (BAYLEY) Joan

She took over the lease of Limekiln Lane Pottery 1 from Henry Hobbs.

1724 13 Mar. Whereas the Mayor Burgesses and Commonalty of the City of Bristol  by their Indre. of Lease dated the four and twentieth day of March 1692 … did demise and grant unto Henry Hobbs … All those their two garden grounds being adjoining together under Brandon Hill … conteyning in breadth in the front towards the Lane leading to the Limekiln One hundred foot or thereabouts … Since the granting of which said recited lease the sd. Henry Hobbs entered upon the sd prses. and became possessed thereof and in pursueance of a Covent. in the same Lease contained had erected and built Several Messuages Workhouses and other Buildings thereon in doing whereof he had laid out the sume of One hundred pounds and upwards … It is this day agreed with Joan Bayly … A New Lease shall be granted her of all those the two severall and respective gardens and all other the premises before menconed … And of all Workhouses, Dwelling houses and all other Structures and Buildings thereon erected … To hold for the like Terme of ninety years from our Lady day next (BB).
1723/4-1739/40 ‘Joan Bayly late H. Hobbs a tenemt. and garden’ (GAB).

1728-1734/5 ‘Mrs Bayly’s Tenemts., Potthouse & other Tenements’ Trenchard Lane/Cow Lane (St Augustine-L).

She does not appear to have been a potter.  William Pottery and John Weaver were her tenants.  After 1739/40 John Plomer started to pay rent on the property and the lease passed to him.

 

BEACHAM Elizabeth

Born c1861 in Frome, Somerset.

1881 Ware printer pottery (20), boarding at 2 Tubal Place, Thomas Street, St Mary Redcliffe parish (81C).

 

BEAVIS John Alfred

Born c1855 in France, son of James Beavis, labourer (71C).

1871 1 Gough’s Court, Temple parish (16), living with parents (71C).

BEDFORD John

1655 13 Jan. A potter of Trinity Ward he stood surety of £5 for Dorothie Child to keep an alehouse (AKL).

BEECH John

1775 Potter, 37 Welsh Back (SD).
1777 25 Feb. A potter of St Stephen’s parish he was granted a licence to marry Elizabeth Holder of St James’s parish.  Bondsman: Paul Hill, sexton of St James’s parish (M).
1777 26 Feb. James Beech of St Stephen’s parish, potter, married Elizabeth Holder of St James’s parish (JaPR).

 

BEER Johanna

Born c1801 in Temple parish (81C).

1881 Pottery hand, widow, inmate in the Bristol City Workhouse, Stapleton (80) (81C).

BELL Thomas

1735 28 Oct. A potter of Bristol he stood surety for the appearance of John Dryland, mariner, at the next Gaol Delivery (T).

 

BELL W. Heward

1905 26 Dec. He was described as a director of Pountney and Co. Ltd. (Western Daily Press).
W. Heward Bell had invested a large sum of money in developing the Fishponds Pottery and had joined the board of directors in 1900.
