BALDWIN William

Born c1877 in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire (11C).

BALL Percival Henry

1935 27 Mar. ‘Death in accordance with the medical evidence was the verdict recorded at an inquest held yesterday by the Bristol city coroner … on Percival Henry Ball (54) of Stock Road, Easton.  The widow said her husband came out of the army in May 1919 and began work at the Bristol Pottery the following July.  He had two machines to feed – one with flints and the other with stones.  After he had been there about 6 years he was home ill every year for a month.  He was seen by two doctors but he gradually got worse.  He was taken off the crushing machine work in September 1931, after being examined by the doctor at the Pottery.  He continued on light work until February 1933, since when he had not worked.  He died on March 23.  Dr A.L. Taylor, pathologist to the Bristol General Hospital said death was due to heart failure following fibrosis of the lungs due to silicosis’ (Western Daily Press).

1872 11 Feb. Noted as a potter when his son Thomas Duncalf Ball, a farmer of Trinity Street, married Clara Ann Thatcher (HTPR).

1891 20 Dec. Noted as a potter on the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth to William Beard, a brushmaker (EPR).

1860 2 Feb. Probably the Benjamin ‘Bamber’ described as foreman of the Bristol [Victoria] Pottery when he gave evidence against one of the employees charged with theft (Western Daily Press).
1861 Potters foreman, 2 Water Lane, Temple parish (37), living with his wife Mary (36), born in Hanley, and children Ann J. (14), George A. (12), Rosella (10), Thomasine (7) and Walter (4), all born in Hanley, and Mary B. (2), born in Temple parish (61C).
1865 21 Mar. Benjamin Bamford is referred to as one of the foremen at Pountney’s Bristol Pottery (Western Daily Press).
1868 31 Mar. He was described as the manager of Pountney’s Bristol Pottery (Western Daily Press).
1869 25 Nov. A potter’s foreman he died in Totterdown. His will was proved on 29 December and he left personal effects valued at under £600 (PRO National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966).

BAMFORD Mary

Born c1824 in Hanley, Staffordshire, the wife of Benjamin Bamford (61C).

1868 10 Oct. ‘Deaths. September 27 at the Bristol Victoria Pottery, St Philip’s Marsh, Mary, the beloved wife of Benjamin Bamford, aged 44’ (Bristol Mercury).

BANFORD James

1773 19 Jan. The son of Thomas Banford, late of Berkeley, Gloucestershire, mariner, deceased, he was apprenticed to Richard and Judith Champion as a china painter, friends to find apparel and washing (A, Ao).
1781 9 Feb. He obtained his freedom as a china painter (F, G).
1781 China manufacturer, Cold Bath Square, Cold Bath Fields, St James’s Clerkenwell, London (P).

BARKER O.D.

1884 16 Dec. He was described as the manager at Messrs Price’s Pottery, Victoria Street, when he gave evidence into the death of Frederick Porter, an assistant at the pottery (Bristol Mercury).
