BRITTON (BRITTIN) Joseph I

The father of Joseph Britton II (51C, JBPR).

1850 25 Jul. Noted as a potter when his son William (24), a boilermaker, of Boot Lane, Bedminster, married Harriet Davies (JBPR).
1855 24 Sep. Noted as a potter when his son Joseph II (30), potter, of Little Paradise, Bedminster, married Harriet Bird (JBPR).
1866 22 Oct.  Noted as a potter when his son Joseph II (40), potter, of East Street, Bedminster, married Betsy Smart (JBPR).

 

BRITTON Joseph II

Born c1829 in St Philip’s parish, Bristol, the son of Joseph Britton I (51C, JBPR).

1851 Lodging at 6 Queens Head Court, St Thomas parish (22) (51C). (Note: there is a 4 year discrepancy in his age between the 1851 census and marriage in 1855).
1855 24 Sep. Little Paradise, Bedminster (30), the son of Joseph Britton I, potter, he married Harriet Bird (25) (JBPR).
1861 7 Tuckers Court, St Philip’s parish (36), living with his wife Harriet (31) and children (61C).
1866 22 Oct.  East Street, Bedminster, widower (40), the son of Joseph Britton I, potter, he married Betsy Smart (34) (JBPR).
1868 1 Nov. Lamb Street, St Philip’s parish (PPR).
1871 55 Great George Street, St Philip’s parish (46), living with his wife Betsy (38) and children (71C).
1892 20 Feb. Noted as a potter when his daughter Beatrice Emily Britton (23) married William Benjamin Down (EPR).

BROOKS John

1915 25 Mar. Described as a middle-aged man, employed at the Albert Pottery Co., he was charged with four others of killing or taking two linnets, and also with cruelty to them. The bird catchers were found in a field adjoining Sparke-Evans Park, St Philip’s Marsh with a net, two linnets pegged to the ground, and a linnet in a cage.   Brooks said that he was in the field looking for a gate which had been taken from his master’s field and that he had nothing to do with bird catching. The case against him was dismissed (Western Daily Press).

1868 20 Jun. He was described as foreman of Price’s Pottery in Temple Street/Thomas Street (Bristol Mercury).

1902 6 Nov. ‘A man named Henry Brown, aged 50, who lives at 23 Atlas Terrace, St Philip’s Marsh, was working at the Victoria Potteries yesterday, when he fell into some hot water and was badly scalded.  He was taken to the Bristol General Hospital and was detained’ (Western Daily Press).

BROWN John

The son of John Brown of Abbots Leigh, Somerset, yeoman, and the brother of William Brown (A).

1731 22 Sep. He was apprenticed to William and Ann Pottery, £8 paid with the apprentice. Friends to find apparel (A, Ao, Ar).
1739 7 Nov. He became a free potmaker (F, G).

BROWN Lewis

1740 22 Dec. He was described as a potter of Bristol when he was bondsman to a licence for marriage, granted to John King of Bedminster (M).
1747 27 Jun. He became a free potter because of his marriage to Sarah, daughter of Lewis Watkins (F).
1754 Potter, St Mary Redcliffe parish (P).
1755 15 Feb. ‘One house and garden upon Redcliff Hill in the tenure of Mr Lewis Brown potter’ for sale by auction (FFJ).
1774 5 Oct. John Lewis, painter, obtained his freedom because of his marriage to ‘Elizabeth, daughter of Lewis Brown, potter, dec’d’. (G).
1784 8 Apr. Samuel Barnes, cabinetmaker, obtained his freedom because of his marriage to Ann. daughter of Lewis Brown (G).
