1865 | 4 Feb. The Joseph Arnold Turner ‘who works at Messrs Powell’s, Temple Gate Pottery, summoned for assaulting Stephen Whittaker. Prosecutor lives at Wellington Street, a private house, and this morning defendant and three others entered and asked for a quart of beer. The servant of the house replied that they did not sell beer, upon which the defendant struck the complainant a violent blow on the eye. Prisoner said Whittaker did not keep a private house, it was a brothel … He was fined 10s and costs, or in default 14 days imprisonment’ (Bristol Times & Mirror). |
