1873 | 24 Jan. Possibly the John Smith who ‘was charged with stealing a quantity of oats, valued 6d, the property of Mr John Ellis, of the Crown Pottery, St George’s. The prisoner had been in a position of trust for some years, during which time a great many things had been lost, but the present charge was the first proved against him. He was sentenced to two months’ hard labour’ (Western Daily Press). |
