1805 Then in Bovey Tracey in Devon, he was born in ‘Land Garrick’, Monmouthshire.  When he was 14 he hired himself with Ring and Carter in the pottery manufactory at Temple Backs, Bristol, and stayed there for 10 years.  Then he came to Burslem, Staffordshire, and worked with Enoch Wood as a journeyman.  He then went to Swansea in Wales and rented a dwelling house for £17 a year, and lived there for 1½ years, before moving to Bovey Tracey where he hired himself to Messrs Honeychurch and company for a year, of which he had served 3 months (Settlement Examination, Overseers of the Poor, Bovey Tracey – Devon Heritage Centre 2160 A/PO 751).
