Born c1868 in Bristol, the son of James G. Hawley and the brother of George Henry and James A. Hawley (81C).

1881 18 Somerset Square, Bedminster (12), living with his parents and siblings (81C).
1888 1 Mar. ‘John Winter and John Winter, father and son, and Alfred Hollister, a young man, were charged with stealing a shirt, a money box and about 2s in money, the property of James Joseph Hawley of the Temple Backs Pottery Works’ (Bristol Mercury).
1891 Potter, 18 Somerset Square, Bedminster (22), living with his widowed mother and siblings (91C).
1893 6 Jul. He married Eliza Minnie Francis at St Paul’s church (Ancestry website).
1894-96 Manufacturer, Redcliff House, Hill Avenue, Victoria Park (RPR).
1894-97 Redcliff House, Hillside Avenue, Totterdown (WD).
1896 10 Apr. Described as a potter when his mother’s will was proved.
1898-1901 45 Hill Avenue, Totterdown (WD).
1901 Glass and earthenware dealer (employer), 45 Hill Avenue, Bedminster (32), living with his wife Eliza M. (31) and children (01C).
1911 Licensed victualler, Southville Hotel, 2 Alpha Road, Bedminster (42), living with his wife Eliza (41) and children, and Alma Green (21), a domestic servant (11C).
1815 1 Jun. He died and was described in his will as a licensed victualler of Southville Hotel, Bedminster.  His will was proved on 21 Jun by Eliza Minnie Hawley, his widow, and his effects were valued at £5,508.3s.10d (PRO National Probate Calendar, Index of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1966).
1915 2 Jun. ‘Died, June 1, at the Southville Hotel, Joseph, beloved husband of Minnie Hawley, after a short illness, son of the late G.J. Hawley, Pottery Temple Back and Somerset Square’ (Western Daily Press).
