1865 8 Apr. ‘John Cornish, a dirty looking fellow, was charged with assaulting his wife Eliza. Complainant stated that her husband worked at a pottery, and was in the habit of spending his time at a public house. She went out to work every day as a packer at a tobacco manufactory, in order to help to support herself and child, but on returning home at night she was often locked out by the prisoner, who also beat her and her child continually. The landlady of the house where the parties lived (Temple Street) confirmed complainant’s statement. The magistrates sentenced the prisoner to two months’ hard labour’ (Bristol Mercury).
