MARKS William

Born c1821 in Bristol, the brother of Joel Marks and the father of James Joel, William John and Joseph Marks II (51C, 81C, 91C).

1820 24 Dec. He was baptised in Temple church, the son of Joel and Hester Marks. Joel was a smith or brightsmith (information from Jackie James).
1836 5 or 10 Oct. He was apprenticed to J.D. Pountney, aged 15 years (FM, Ao).
1859 1 Sep. ‘William Marks, potter, late apprentice of John Decimus Pountney, potter, deceased, a free burgess.  Indre of apprentice dated 5 October 1836, indorsed by Master and produced.  Apprentice identified by Mrs Pountney’ (FM).
1841 Potter’s apprentice, Church Street, Temple parish (20), living with his widowed mother Esther Allen [presumably she had remarried], a tobacconist (41C).
1843 11 Sep. Church Street, Temple parish, the son of Joseph Marks, a smith, he married Sarah Ann Heddington, a staymaker, the daughter of James Heddington, a mason (TPR).
1844-57 Temple parish (TPR).
1851 4 Tailors Court, Temple parish (30), living with his wife Sarah Ann (25) born in Bristol and children (51C).
1859 1 Sep. ‘William Marks, potter, late apprentice of John Decimus Pountney, potter, deceased, a free burgess. Inre of apprentice dated 5 October 1836, indorsed by Master and produced. Apprentice identified by Mrs Pountney’ (FM).
1861 1 Stones (or Stowes) Court, Church Street, Temple parish (40), living with his wife Sarah Ann (36) and children (61C).
1866 25 Jul. He was employed at Pountneys Bristol Pottery when he took part in a boat race in the pottery boat ‘Marian’ on the Floating Harbour (Western Daily Press).
1871 Handler at pottery, 1 Stones Court, Church Street, Temple parish (50), living with his wife (Sarah) Ann (45) and children (71C).
1871 10 Dec. Noted as a potter when his daughter Ann (19) of West Street married Richard Jervis Lang (HTPR).
1877 11 Nov. Noted as a potter when his son James Joel Marks (31) of Cheese Lane, St Philip’s parish married Alice Bull (PPR).
1878 5 Aug. Noted as a potter when his son William John (34) of St Philip’s parish married Annie Barry (PPR).
1881 Handler at pottery, 25 Langton Terrace, Bedminster (60), living with his wife Sarah Ann (56) and children (81C).
1891 Potter handler, widower, 36 Doveton Street, Bedminster (70), living with his daughter Fanny (21) (91C).
1896 He died in Bedminster, aged 76 (Ancestry website).
