Born c1829 in Bristol (51C).

1849 9 Sep. Conduit Place, the son of John Crates, fellmonger, he married Mary Ann Hensell, dressmaker, daughter of Samuel Hensell, fellmonger (PaPR).
1850 Probably the John ‘Crease’ of Stapleton (PPR)
1851 5 Prospect Place, St Philip’s parish (22), living with his wife Mary Ann (20), dressmaker, and child Mary A. (51C).
1858 12 Sep. Broad Plain, St Philip’s parish (PPR).
1861 1 Unity Street, St Philip’s parish (32), living with his wife Mary (30) and children (61C).
1867 13 Oct. Unity Street, St Philip’s parish (PPR).
1869 21 Mar. Unity Street, St Philip’s parish (PPR).
1881 His wife was a widow and a publican at the Golden Heart, 11 Unity Street, St Philip’s parish (71C).
1885 26 May.  Noted as deceased when his daughter Clara Crates (22) married Henry Jabes Brodribb (HTPR).
