1864 | 14 May. Elizabeth Cornish was involved in a magistrate’s court hearing, allegedly having encouraged the prisoner, Susan Penny, in stealing and pawning goods. The husband of Elizabeth Cornish ‘said he had worked at the Bristol Pottery for 26 years, but he could not keep a thing in the house, as his wife got rid of it to obtain drink. He had three children, whom he could not leave, otherwise he would have gone from his wife years ago. There was not a single sheet on the bed. He was once a local preacher, but owing to his wife’s misconduct and drinking habits he was obliged to give it up, and he really didn’t know what to do.
